Accurate sound reproduction for a speaker was typically judged by how closely and accurately a given speaker could reproduce the sound(s) of instruments and voice compared to the real thing. The Holly Grail or the goal of an "Audiophile" was accurate sound reproduction. Back in the day, before the word "Audiophile" became a dirty word and a punching bag on internet forums, an audiophile was someone who enjoyed the hobby of HiFi or stereo sound reproduction much the same as a stamp collector is known by name as an "Philatelist" or a coin collector or person who's hobby is the collecting or study of money is called a "Numismatics". The midrange and highs were very very good though The original ones, not the model they're selling currently. But I don't think anyone would say they aren't audiophile speakers. NHT came out with the SuperZero speaker back in the early 90's.
You mentioned how could a tiny speaker with no bass below 100hz be considered audiophile worthy. In a better speaker, what one might call an audiophile speaker, those instruments sound more accurate and real. For example, in some speakers a kick drum sounds bloated, a snare sounds dull, a cymbal sounds tizzy or like white noise, voices don't sound accurate, guitar sounds too bright and screeching, etc.
How closely do instruments in music played through the speakers sound like the instruments do in real life. One thing that comes to mind is accuracy.
